There are two things I love most about our planet: sunsets and moonlit nights. I love to watch the sunset from the shores of English Bay, Stanley Park, or from the nudist beach called Wreck Beach, which is just below the campus of the University of British Columbia. On moonlit nights, I usually stroll in a park or by a lake, and sometimes, to have time with my thoughts, I drive to an empty soccer field, lie down on the hood of my suv and watch the full moon. And there, I would reminisce the sunsets and moonlit nights that I had witnessed long ago, in the Bicol region of the Philippines.

Napansin ko din na LAGIM Komiks itong publisher ng kwento ni Bes Pascual. Me kutob pa nga akong kinopya ang kwento sa early "tamer" issues ng Tales from the Crypt. The nerve. The AUDACITY!
Sino bang publisher ng LAGIM Komiks? Benipayo Press? Am sure di 'yan ACE Publications.
Meron kasi akong isang isyu ng LAGIM Komiks na me drawing si Tony De Zuniga. Probably the last surviving (and great) Filipino komiks artists of that era (and in my opinion even in this era). At least De Zuniga was not "indie" in his drawing style.
Interesting itong mga little known Pinoy artists with original art styles that could have given the ACE traditionalist artists a run for their money, kung nabigyan lang sila ng pagkakataon.
Nagustuhan ko ang kwento ninyo kina Ilag. Bitter-sweet. Sayang. Napunta sa advertising ang talent nya.
Sa Phil. Komiks Review nabanggit ni Mars Ravelo doon na meron daw "old boy network" ng mga writers at artists sa ACE Publications. Kontrolado daw ng mga kokonting "magagaling" na creatives kaya mahirap makapasok sa ACE ang mga up ang coming artists and writers. They were beholden to follow these few creatives' art styles and philosophies. If not, exit stage left. Doon ka sa mga smaller publications. Kasama na siguro roon yung mga na-feature 'nyong mga magagaling but obscure Pinoy artists.
Because of this unreasonable closed family operation sa ACE, hindi naging bukas ang creativity. Ewan ko. Siguro mali ako. What you think?

Si Bess Pascual ay nagsulat din later on ng sarili niyang obra. He did for Lagim Komiks BATIKOBRA AT FLYING SALAKOT which was made into a movie starring APENG DALDAL.
Lagim Komiks was published by G. Miranda & Sons. One of the Santiago siblings (the family of Premier Productions), is married to a Miranda and was the one who started G Miranda & Sons komiks. Though G Miranda was actually a book store on CLaro M. Recto Street in Manila, they also published komiks such as: Lagim, Sampaguita, Diamante, Sweethearts, Ditektib, and others. Lagim was one of their most successful komiks. It showcased the best illustrators (but for some reasons it also included BES PASCUAL & ROSS MATIENZO) and also hired the likes of Pablo S. Gomez, Virgo Villa (Mars Ravelo's nom de plume), & Rico Bello Omagap. In a separate article, I will tackle the mysterious VIRGO VILLA – because even if everybody knew who he was (Mars Ravelo), there is another angle to it that many did not know.
In the old ACE Publications (located at the corner of Pioneer & Sheridan Streets in Mandaluyong), it was indeed true that CLODUALDO DEL MUNDO ran the show. Of course this was even before my time. I have known what took place in the old days of comics by having hours and hours of conversations with the late AS TENORIO (Tony Tenorio) who was already writing for ACE since time immemorial. The writers and illustrators of ACE were indeed impressive, the créme de la créme of illustrated books. When a labor dispute erupted, The Roces Family shut down the Mandaluyong compound and opened a new one (the Quezon City ATLAS). Though this QC branch began as Pilipino Komiks Inc, it eventually became ATLAS where CARDA FEATURES was also born (the one distributing komiks overseas). And yes, even then, ATLAS was still CLIQUE-ISH. It would not just accept a script or illustrator unless he or she had proven something. Sometimes, if the editor believed that you, as a talent is indeed gifted, he could give you the needed break to start your career.
Now, Ross Matienzo. In his time, he was the oddball of komiks because he refused to be conventional. While everybody was going ga-ga over Coching & Redondo, Matienzo inisisted that he be MATIENZO, period. God knows how many hours I've spent talking with the guy, and he never got tired talking, something I would also say about an actress named AMALIA FUENTES. She also loves to talk. In our showbiz gatherings, be prepared to listen to Miss Fuentes because she had a lot to say. Same thing with Mr. Matienzo. Everytime I would see him at El Dorado (the publications owned by Terry Cinco), he would approach me and the conversation would begin. He-he). What's amazing with the guy was that he read and watched everything. In fact, there was one episode of my TV Show Alindog where Alma Moreno and Charmie Benavidez had a fight in a scene and during the take, the set broke open near the tail end of the sequence. We really intended to retake it, but Mario O'hara, the director, told me later on that we were running out of time (in those days we're only allowed to tape our shows for 8 hours). Because we're compelled to vacate the studio, we just kept the scene. Mr. Matienzo was so annoyed by this when he watched the episode and he nagged me non-stop about it, as if it was my fault that the set broke! He-he. Well, this is just a sampler of how intense the guy was. But, I will also post his art for you to see.

How about the lesser known TANCHI MENDOZA, who did an adaptation of Dracula for Lagim ? or JOEL MAGPAYO, who struuted his stuff with Superyor Komiks and Redondo Komix ?

Joel Magpayo idn't really do a lot of komiks per se, rather he was only doing regularly featured art of weekly poems for GASI.
Tanchi Mendoza did many horror features for Romansa, Hasmin and Paraluman komiks. I still have to locate their drawings. I will post them if found.
Rip off nga ito. Parang Tales from the Crypt. Sinu-sino pa ba ang mga nang-rip-off noon sa komiks?
Mr. Cool, please name names. Kailangan nating malaman kung sino-sino nga ba itong mga taong ito para naman accurate ang nalalaman namin sa history ng naging komiks industry ng Pilipinas.

Kung nagpupunta ka doon sa PKMB, may isang well-known writer-illustrator na TALAMPAKANG nag-post ng art na kinopya kay Alex Ross at NAGWALA ang mga artist na miyembro. Napilitan yung MANGONGOPYA na tanggalin ang kanyang posted art dahil puro GNASHING TEETH ang ginawa ng mga kapuwa niya artists. Pero maski noon pa, kodigero na nga ang taong ito at hanggang ngayong gurang na siya ay kodigero pa rin.
Ayan. Let's just leave it that way, Mr. Warm. Dahil hot na hot kang ibulgar ang mga taong ganito, palitan mo na ang pangalan mo ng MR. HOT.

Mi kasabihang IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF COMPLIMENT. I'm giving Bes Pascual, the benefit of the doubt, regarding his alleged EC rip-offs. Baka gusto lang niyang i-share sa masa ang masterworks sa CRYPT, at VAULT OF HORROR ng EC publications ? pero sana, nag -lagay siya ng caveat: HALAW NI BES PASCUAL, MULA SA MGA PUBLICATIONS NI WILLIAM GAINES.

Indeed, that would have been the moral thing to do. But, in the old industry, the talents were so used to the fact that the Phi;ippines was not a signatory to the Bern Copyright Law, thus the copying became too rampant. Even our movies were also guilty of this. In fact, in the 50s and 60s the Filipinos were bumrapped by some nasty "ugly Americans" by calling the Filipinos APES, because they said that "Filipinos are like monkeys because they ape (copy) everything they see!"
