SLAVE MENTALITY OF THE FILIPINOS











Since time immemorial, I have been noticing how Filipino workers would generally succumb to the old cliché: DON'T BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU.

In the old komiks industry for instance, some talented people (writers and artists) tend to do whatever the publishers blatantly ask them.

Don't start a UNION!

Don't start a GUILD!

Don't create any work that the company thinks would be against its policies.

Many bowed their heads and let the monopoly thrived.
Very few progressive-minded talents disagreed and did EXACTLY what the bosses have forbidden them to do.
The meek ones remained in the publication. The bold ones were annihilated to kingdom come.

I have nothing but respect for these group who were so valiant enough to fight for what is right.
And for those YES MEN, I have nothing but disgust for you. In a court of law, an accomplice to murder is also guilty of murder. Therefore, this meek group of people, condoning the CONSTRICTION of these so-called monopolous publishers, became an instrument to aid the business men to treat the outspoken ones like excrement, to say the least.

Reasoning such as the following is the height of one's imbecillic thinking:

"Dibat ang taong pilit niyong sinisiraan na mang-gagamit ay siya ngayong nagpapakain sa mga nawalan ng trabaho sa komiks. At kahit sa sandaling panahon may kaunti silang panapal na nailagay sa matagal na nilang butas na bituka.
hindi obserbasyon o sour graping ang sagot mr. cool. aT DI PANINIRA! "

As long as we get people with such stupid reasoning and outlook, there will always be unfair practices involving treatment, salary, even artistic freedom.

Why can't these people see the light? Why can't they realize that without them as talent of a publishing company, THERE WILL BE NO BUSINESS? The publisher may be the hand that feeds you, but it's YOU who make it happen so that that hand will have something to feed you in the first place. Isn't this simple enough to be seen, felt, realized?

What's wrong with these group of senseless people, trying to denigrade themselves by believing they are actually SLAVES and therefore should just follow their MASTERS with closed eyes?

"That's BALONEY! Stupid is not written on my forehead," Judge Judy will surely say.

These meek and mindless creatures, have, what Philosopher Friedrick Nietzsche would call, THE SLAVE MENTALITY.

These people blindly believe that there is something virtuous about their own enslavement, and therefore they seek it and languish in it. They think there is something virtuous about self-belittlement and the psychological crippling that goes with it. The slave mentality promoted psychological feebleness; and it regarded all of this as honourable.

If you belong to this group, whoever you are, please wake up and smell the CHAMPAKA.
Do what is right. You are not BELOW your publisher. You are EVEN with your publisher. You work for him, he pays you in return. Symbiosis. Period.

Meanwhile, for those who formed a workers union, special mention for that well-known artist who reportedly SLAPPED AN EDITOR, and for those who defied the publishers for treating them unfairly – Let's all stand up and give them all a big hand of applause.

Never again should komiks writers and illustrators allow any monopoly in komiks publishing. The time has come that talent fees be upgraded according to the current standard of living. Komiks writers and Illustrators are human beings, too. Treat them fairly.

iyong kasing mga artists at writers na may slave mentality ay ayaw kagatin ang kamay na nagpapakain sa kanila dahil gustong-gusto nila ang LASON na pinakakain sa kanila, hihihi.

Puwera biro, ito talagang slave mentality na kultura ay hanggan buto na yata ng mga pilipino. Nuon ang mga pilipino ay slave ito ng mga kastela at amerikano, ngayon ay slave na naman ng mga singkit na hapon. Pansinin mo na lang ang mga drawings ng mga artists ngayon sa atin, puro na yata stelo hapon.

Itong slave mentality ang numero unong problema ng mga pilipino na ang resulta nito ay pasulong na PAATRAS. Hanggan ang pilipino ay hindi nagsusumikap na gumawa ng anumang mga bagay na ORIGINAL at ipinaglalaban ang kanilang SARILING MGA IDEYA ay palaging kulelat tayo, o slave ng lahat na ang mga utak ay may pagka-alipin.

Pero paano ba ang paggawa ng isang bagay na ORIGINAL? Sa mga writers, huwag gagaya sa mga gawa ng mga puti, marami tayong mga storya sa kultura natin na puwedeng gamitin. Sa mga artists naman, mayaman ang sining ng nakaraan mga dibuho natin na puwedeng gawin batayan ang mga ito at palawakin sa paggamit ng makabagong mga prensipiyo para maging unique ang mga dibuho natin na matatawag natin sariling atin.

Isang ehemplo na original kuno ay ang "COMICS ILLUSTRATIONS according to FLORO DERY," hihihi, lalo na ang original na "Flor's Fundamental Lenght L" sa chapter 9 nito," hihihi uli.

Pagbubuhat ng sariling bangko ito, pero ito ang simula ng originality, hihihi pa uli.

Sa lahat ng nababasahan ko ng komento ang mga sinasabi mo ang may sense unlike others na kapos yata sa nalalaman at madada lang. I like your attitude, although others may, I think, misinterpret what's your point is. Totoo ang mga sinabi mo punto por punto May naaalala ako noong grupo ng mga artist-writers na sumubok banggain ang malaking publisher na binibigyan nila ng trabaho pero walang nangyari. Na-ban lang sila sa compound ng publisher. Mar Santana is one of them. Ganyan katigas at kalakas ang loob ng mga publisher noon kung saan napakarami pa noong komiks na naglalabasan at mayroong kompetisyon. Pulubi ang trato nila sa kanilang mga contributor at kakarampot na limos lamang ang katapat nila. Nakalulungkot. Dito sa Pilipinas, walang kinabukasan ang mga writer unlike diyan sa abroad particularly sa America, malalaking kumita ang mga writer at iginagalang. Ngayon na iisang plato na lang ang komiks na inihain sa mesa , kanya-kanyang duhapang na lang ang mangyayari. Ito ang dahilan kaya nakalulungkot man, nag-retire ako sa komiks. I had a very unforgettable experienced sa paglubog ng komiks. Hindi ka puwedeng dumepende rito kaya dapat ay gawin na lamang itong sideline. An outlet, but never depend on it as your only means of earning a living. I learned from my mistakes bagamat, inuulit ko, sa komiks galing ang mahahalagang bagay na naipundar ko noon na nagawa kong sinupin and I still enjoyed it hanggang ngayon.

Bulls eye mo ang syndrome na ito.
Sa totoo lang, yung lecture mo sa drawing ay ORIG at very useful and applicable. Punung-puno pa ng mga jokes na talagang patatawanin ka ng HA-HE-HI-HO-HU!

Pero sa halip na mayroon na nito, may mga tao ring gustong i-limit ang RP komiks sa newsprint lang, mura lang, ipagbili lang sa buong Pilipinas. Talagang THIRD WORLD CENTRIC lang ang gusto nila. Funny how they're not even so concerned about the CONTENT. Kahi't kelan ay hindi sila nagbanggit nito, when in fact, this is the most important thing in a comic book.

Arman:

Kahanga-hanga ka, na sa kabila ng naranasan mo sa paglubog ng komiks ay hindi ka naging bitter kaylan man. Mahal mo pa rin ang medium na ito, at hindi kita masisisi. Wala talagang tatalo sa ILLUSTRATED STORY. Ibang-iba ang appeal nito at emotional impact sa nagbabasa. Katulad mo, kahi't hindi ako nagtagal masyado sa komiks, mahal ko pa rin ito. Marahil ay hindi kasing-alab ng pagmamahal dito ni Vincent Benjamin Kua. Noong mga bata pa kami ng yumaong si Vincent, sabay kaming nagsimula sa Atlas at sa tuwing magkikita kami sa Atlas noon ay kay rami naming ginawang brainstorming kung paano ba puwedeng dalhin ang ating komiks sa bagong panahon.

Nang katukin ako ng Channel 2, naiwan siya sa komiks at ako'y nagtungo sa TV. Nang maging very busy ako sa TV, hinimok ko siyang magsulat sa kahi't isa man lang sa mga shows na hawak ko, pero mas mahal talaga niya ang komiks.

Nalaman ko na lamang na nang bumagsak na ang komiks at sa TV pala siya napunta. It might have broken him spiritually. Alam ko kung gaano siya ka-passionate sa komiks. May he rest in peace.

Ako man, tulad mo, ay nagmamahal pa rin sa medium ng komiks. Kay sarap gunitain kung gaano kasaya sa aking kalooban na gumawa ng katha't guhit.

Naalala ko pa noon kung sino ang idolo namin ni Vincent: si Stan Drake, at talagang buking na buking sa drawing namin ang istilo ng artist na ito sa umpisa.

Those were the days.

i'm almost tempted to 'butcher' this story of yours but have second thought in the end. besides, you're my 'sensei' and it would be ungrateful for a student to criticize his teacher, and i maybe 'OT' if i do so.
pero kitang-kita ang pagmamahal mo sa komiks at concern sa mga gumagawa nito. i'm aching to see your promised new artworks and stories to be posted here or in the PKMB. they may put pinoy comics writing and art in a new direction.
you're a visionary, and though sometimes i disagree with your thoughts but not openly rebut 'em, it pays giving 'em deep thought.

You should have done it. He-he. But, it won't be me who's going to benefit, but the the AFRICAN AUTHOR who wrote the original. There was a time when we were doing ADAPTATIONS of award-winning works by world's authors, and this piece is one of them. As you would have noticed, it said SCRIPTED by, not story by. Sa akin na-assign itong piece na ito, at sinulat ko na may Philippine setting lang like what the komiks asked us to do. Pero before the actual story, nakalagay naman na adaptations ito. This piece was actually an award-winning piece from Africa, and it received an award. Others I have adapted were O Henry's AFTER TENTY YEARS, Leo Tolstoi's TO WHOM SHALL I TELL MY SORROW, THE WILL OF ALLAH, another African piece. It was the publisher's idea in those days, that GREAT literature is seldom read by the masses, and therefore, to expose them to the greatest works in the world, this project was done. I will post all of these adaptations. Take note now that the original material is kept intact, theme and all, except for changing the setting to reflect Philippine society. The challenge here for the writer was big, indeed. Having a foreign theme and setting and make it PHILIPPINE-ized, is a difficult thing to do. I tried to make it as authentic as possible. This is also the reason why I reacted to Arman's love story. A great love story, but his project was even more tough to do, because his project was write the setting as is, but made Filipinized in theme and nuances. Hindi biro ito.

I will post these items next.

Kaya naman pala akala mo'y sa akin ito, dahil yung artist na si Mar Mendoza ay hindi inilagay ang; SCRIPTED BY. Pero sa komiks naman ay may area ito na kung saan mga adaptations lahat ang kuwento at isa nga ito. Ngayon ko lang napagtanto na inilagay pala ng artist eh, STORY BY:

Anyway, I will be scanning more of these adaptations. Some of them are actually Pulitzer Prize winners.

Dahil din sa mga adaptations-adaptations na yan na ginagawa ninyo ng walang paalam, pahintulot o title credit na binibigay sa original award winning foriegn author, sumibol ang walang pakundangang plagiarism at panggagaya ng Pinoy comics creators. AMINIIIIIIN.

You missed the whole description. Sa umpisang page ay naroon lahat ang credits ng adaptations, at nakalagay lahat ang authors. Kaya lang, napunit na nga ito kaya hindi na nailagay dito.

Also, most of them actually belong to public domain. The works of Luigi Pirandello and Tolstoi have been translated and adapted allover the world. Ginawa lang itong project na ito para ma-samplulan kahi't paano, ng Filipino masses, na hindi makaabot sa ganitong mga materyales.

Para sa akin, mas mabuti na ang ganito, kaysa naman sa mga nagaganap noon at ngayon diyan sa ating bansa. Puro kopya sa hollywood. Yun lang Kapten Barbell, eh, talampakang SMALLVILLE. Sa ganitong bagay, hindi ako sasama sa project maski pa bayaran ako ng isang bilyon.

At kung plagiarism ang pag-uusapan, kabi-kabila talaga ito diyan sa Pilipinas. Lalo na sa komiks. Pero itong project noon ng Atlas at El Dorado ay ibang bagay. The difference is much more dramatic than Apples and Oranges.

So, rest assured that the authors of these great works adapted to Philippine setting, were mentioned, and made sure that they were described as adaptations, no more, no less.
